Inclusive and Innovative Digital Education for Migrant Community in Kenya and Somalia (IIDEMIC)
The “IIDEMIC” project focuses on enhancing employability through the development of soft skills. This aligns with global efforts to improve software and technical skills necessary to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and respond to global standards like 21st century skills in education and Agenda 2063.
- The project’s vision includes:
- Empowering Refugees, Host Communities, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs): This is achieved through tertiary education, research, and partnerships in refugee camps in Kakuma and Dadaab. Kenyatta University (KU) has established a campus in Dadaab to facilitate this vision, where refugee students can access academic facilities and technical support through digital programs.
- Strengthening Soft Skill Competencies: The project aims to strengthen soft skill competencies among Somali refugees in Kenya and Somalia. The goal is to improve their entrepreneurial innovation and ability to embrace technology, which are critical skills for the future.
- Promotion of Inclusive Education: IIDEMIC seeks to introduce soft skill competency modules in Kenyan universities. This includes enhancing interaction with inclusive and innovative digital tools and promoting teacher practices in classrooms that integrate 21st century soft skills.
- Development of Inclusive Education Module: The Kenya Institute of Special Needs and Kenyatta University’s Directorate of Disabilities plan to develop an inclusive education module. This module will develop teachers’ skills in inclusive pedagogy to further enhance employability.
In summary, the IIDEMIC project envisions a comprehensive approach to education that integrates soft skills, technological adeptness, and inclusivity, particularly focusing on the needs of migrants, refugees, and the communities that host them
